The Institute's collection has over 20,000 photographs donated by individuals and organizations such as the Committee of Americans of Polish Descent and the Committee to Help “Solidarity.”

The collection is divided into the following groups:
a) by subject
b) individuals
c) Jozef Pilsudski, Polish Legions and Polish Military Organization,
d) Localities
e) Solidarity

Among the subjects included there is a unique photo collection of the Polish army and Polish children in the Soviet Union. There are about 1,000 photos of Poles deported to Siberia, their trek to join the Polish army, and the fate of children separated from their parents and adopted by the Polish Army of General Wladyslaw Anders.

Marshal Jozef Pilsudski (taken on June 23, 1928)

Photos of individuals, many of them well known politicians, military and civil leaders, and the Pilsudski collection are among the most popular. There are materials related to the wartime visits to the U.S. by General Wladyslaw Sikorski and Ignacy Paderewski. In the Pilsudski collection there are many unique photographs of the life and activities of the Institute's patron, including military campaigns of the Legions and of his family life.

Eastern Poland (Lwow and Wilno) is strongly represented in this section of photos on localities. The “Solidarity” collection includes photographs of the 1956 Poznan confrontation with the communist authorities as well as the clashes of 1968, 1970, 1980-1981 and the martial law period.
