LIBRARY

The newspaper and magazine collection comprises nearly 3,000 titles. A separate section of the library contains Polish journals and newspapers, primarily those published outside of Poland. Among the most important collections are those of “Na Strazy” (On Guard) from Jerusalem, “Polak w Libanie” (Poles in Lebanon) from Beirut, and the following publications in the United States; “Bulletin of KNAPP” (National Committee of Americans of Polish Descent), “Tygodnik Polski” (Polish Weekly) and “The Polish Review” (Przeglad Polski).

The polish underground press (from mid-1970s to 1990) is represented by over 1,350 titles. The newspapers – about 100 of them – are remarkably complete, from 80% to 100%. Because of this, in the wide range of newspapers published by numerous independent organizations, the collection is representative of the underground press of that period. In addition to almost complete collections of press services of the information agencies, the collection includes such publications as Mazowsze Weekly, The Fraternal, Current Information, From Day to Day, Fighting Solidarity, Solidarity (published in Gdansk), Lower Silesia Solidarity, Free Workers’ Voice. Lower Silesia Bulletin, and such cultural publications as Opinie, Spotkania, Puls, Arka, Czas Kultury, Karta and Kultura Niezależna. The independent press collection at the Institute is one of the largest in the U.S.A.
