Please join us on October 27th (Friday) at 6:30 pm for a meeting with Jack Fairweather, the best-selling author of The Volunteer, and the 2023 Pilsudski Institute Joseph Conrad Literature Award winner.

Jack Fairweather will talk about writing The Volunteer, a story of Polish resistance fighter Witold Pilecki who volunteered to report on Nazi crimes in Auschwitz. Part of Fairweather’s research involved traveling to Poland and visiting the barracks, the safe house where Pilecki was sheltered after the war, and the apartment where he waited to be arrested. Fairweather had also access to the Pilecki family papers and the chance to meet those who new and fought alongside Witold. “Writing the book was an amazing journey,” Fairweather recalls, “and I felt very honored to follow in Pilecki’s footsteps.”

Jack Fairweather was born in Shrewsbury, England. He attended the University of Oxford. For his war coverage in Afghanistan and Baghdad, Fairweather was honored with the British Press Award as well as an Overseas Press Club Award Citation. While in Iraq, he survived a suicide bomb attack and kidnapping attempt. Based on his findings in Iraq and Afghanistan, Fairweather wrote the books A War of Choice: the British in Iraq 2003-9 The Good War: Why We Couldn’t Win the War or the Peace in Afghanistan. His latest book The Volunteer was translated into 25 languages and won the 2019 Costa Book Award - one of the most prestigious British literary awards. He resides in the United States.

Book raffle of the copies of The Volunteer will be held at the end of the evening.
